First, we went over what Theme is and what Main Idea is. Then, the students were divided into groups to sort short paragraphs into either Theme or Main Idea. After they finished in their groups, we went over the sorting together.
Theme = the message, lesson, or moral of a story. We said its like the cream filling of a cupcake because the theme is hidden in the story like the cream is hidden in the cupcake.
Main Idea= what the story is mostly about.
